Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority Installs Over 37,500 LF of Fusible PVC® Pipe using Various Trenchless Technologies

In 2005, Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority (YCUA) completed its first pilot project with Fusible PVC® pipe. The successful project, a short pipe burst of an existing 8-inch cast iron water main, sparked a trust in Fusible PVC® pipe that continues to this day. YCUA has since installed more than 37,500 LF of water main pipelines with Fusible PVC® pipe utilizing horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and static-pull pipe bursting installation methods.

Located 30 miles west of Detroit, Ypsilanti, Michigan is a residential community that sits beside busy Interstate 94 between Ann Arbor and the Motor City. YCUA provides water and wastewater services to the City of Ypsilanti, as well as the surrounding areas of Pittsfield Township, Augusta Township, Sumpter Township, and Superior Township. Similar to other utility companies across the country, YCUA has been tasked with rehabilitating miles of aging and failing pipelines. Fusible PVC® pipe and trenchless technologies have aided YCUA immensely in mitigating project costs and avoiding significant disruptions in populated, congested neighborhoods. Fusible PVC® pipe also has the added benefit of utilizing standard ductile iron fittings for easy reconnections to bell-and-spigot PVC pipe.

YCUA has engaged several local trenchless contractors, such as USA LLC, Pamar Enterprises, Midwest Trenchless Services, Lawrence M. Clarke, and Verdeterre Construction. Avoiding the costly disruptions of conventional open-cut installations, YCUA and these contractors have now utilized trenchless technology with Fusible PVC® pipe on 10 separate projects. Several installations over the past eight years were even performed in conjunction with Michigan DOT projects.
