In February 2013, the City of Taylor, Michigan kicked off an extensive water main replacement program. Ultimately, 25,780 LF of 8-inch and 12-inch Fusible PVC® pipe would be installed in the tight confines of Taylor’s residential neighborhoods, with the majority of the new pipe replacing 8-inch cast iron water mains originally installed over a half century ago. In order to minimize the disruptive impact of construction, the City decided to install the replacement pipe using trenchless methods.
Approximately 16,780 LF of the project was completed by static-pull pipe bursting, with another 9,000 LF installed via horizontal directional drilling (HDD). There were more than 400 service saddles installed on the Fusible PVC® pipe throughout the project. The City used the same standard service saddles used with its bell-and-spigot PVC pipe. The fused pipe strings were charged, chlorinated, and pressure tested prior to pull-in.
Bidigare Contractors, Inc., the successful bidding contractor, teamed with D&D Water & Sewer Inc. for the entirety of the replacement project. Design and inspection services were provided by Wade Trim of Taylor. Bidigare and D&D completed the project on schedule and on budget. Based on this success, the City of Taylor plans to replace additional mains using the same approach.

Mark DiMichele, President of D&D, said: “This was the first opportunity we had to work with the Fusible PVC® product. It proved to be a reliable solution even in a tight neighborhood setting with hundreds of service taps. We will be using it on another water main pipe burst project in Dearborn Heights in the coming weeks.”
John Bidigare, President of Bidigare Construction, said: “As with previous projects where we utilized Fusible PVC®, pipe, it was a very positive experience. The quality support that comes from Underground Solutions is always appreciated. We look forward to working with them on future projects.”
