Located four miles south-southwest of Tampa, MacDill Air Force Base is home to the 6th Air Mobility Wing (6AMV) whose primary mission objective is providing air refueling, responsive airlift and airbase support to over 50 mission partners throughout the U.S. military. Approximately 12,000 military and 1,300 civilian personnel are assigned to the Base, with over 2,900 active duty military and dependents living on Base.
As part of maintaining Base infrastructure, upgrades to the wastewater conveyance system were recently completed. In October 2009, the Base contracted with David Nelson Construction, Inc. of Tampa, FL to replace approximately 7,000 LF of wastewater force main situated alongside and under Bayshore Boulevard, overlooking Tampa Bay. The original design contemplated primarily open cut installation of a new 16” bell-and-spigot PVC force main with limited use of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) with HDPE for certain road crossings and environmentally sensitive areas.
During the bid phase an option to directionally drill the entire project using 16” FPVC® pipe was added due to: a) opportunity for faster installation, b) less disruption, c) significantly less restoration expense to the road and exercise path, and d) the long-term benefits of a leak-free, fused joint pipe system beside the Bay. David Nelson Construction obtained approval to perform the project with FPVC® pipe and construction began on a fast-track basis in November 2009. Equibore of America was retained to perform the HDD installation, with Underground Solutions, Inc. (UGSI) providing pipe and fusion services. Pipe installation was substantially completed in 90 days, including meeting critical milestones prior to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
