The Baltimore County Department of Public Works has a long history of water line design and installation using concrete and ductile iron pipe. Due to corrosion of metallic pipe materials in its system and adjacent distribution networks, the County's water design group, led by Bruce Keller, recently turned to plastic pipe for installations in corrosive soils. To maintain competition, Fusible C-905® pipe was bid as an alternative to HDPE for the MD Route 702 Water Main project. This was the first time that PVC pipe had ever been specified by Baltimore County.
Contractors were allowed to choose between 20" DIPS DR11 HDPE and 18" DR25 Fusible C- 905® pipe on the bid form, with five of the six bidding contractors selecting Fusible C-905® pipe. Although smaller in OD than 20" HDPE, the 18" Fusible C905® pipe provides almost 1/2" greater ID due to PVC's higher strength based on its Hydrostatic Design Basis.
Burgemeister Bell was awarded the project in August 2008. Artie Bell, Burgemeister Bell's president, chose Fusible C905® pipe over HDPE despite having never previously worked with the product.
Bell commented: "I saw the labor benefit of using DIP MJ fittings to connect between sections of open cut and HDD, and the overall installed cost looked better on paper for the PVC, partly due to the reduced diameter valves and fittings. I am happy to report that my assessment was correct; soil conditions were good enough to allow us to dig and install up to 700 LF of the Fusible C905® pipe in a single day. The 800 LF long HDD pulls also went very well." Bell reports the project started October 3rd and was completed, tested to 150 psi, and placed in service by December 1, 2008.
